Cut Expenses from Personal Budget
By Credit Federal | Published 08/12/2007

You already know the evils of high credit card debt, spiraling interest charges on revolving unpaid balances, over-limit fees, etc. So when it comes to a personal budget, what are other ways to cut expenses?

Get personal finances under control and pay bills timely. Use our free personal budget software to track expenses so you can stop wasteful spending, and use our free bill reminder calendar so you send in your payments on time.

Free desktop software to balance checkbook entries, or use the software as a computer checkbook register.
In this article, we examine areas where you have the most control and can quickly cut expenses from your personal budget.

Flavored beverages (and alcohol). Yes, water may be boaring but it's cheaper; and better for you, than coffee. If you cannot drink water direct from the tap, consider a using a filter instead of buying pre-bottled water.

Membership fees. Do you belong to an online service, such as a personal ads? What about an offline service such as a gym? Do you really need; and use, these services?

Tobacco. In addition to wasteful spending, all tobacco products carry health risks. If you chew, spit it out. If you smoke, stomp it out.

Dining out. Even before the tip and taxes, you're already paying more money than if you prepared the meal yourself. And don't forget the cost of gasoline. Cook at home and save.

Gasoline. For every mile you drive, you are basically tossing a dime out of your car window (calculating 20 miles per gallon at $3.00 per gallon). To get a good idea of your gas costs, add up the miles it takes for you to get to work (or some other location) each week, and multiple that total times 10 cents. If; for example, you drive 200 miles per week, that comes to an estimated gas cost of $20.00. May not sound like much, but multiple that over a year, which comes to a cost of $1,040.00. Cut that cost in half; or more, by carpooling. Eliminate unnecessary trips.

Electricity. It's so easy to waste electricity, particulary for household lights. The light bulbs are quiet, and its easy to forget that they are turned on and burning electricity. If you; out of habit, turn on lights during the day even when you don't need lights, take action to break your natural instinct to flick on the switch. Put a pick of tape over the switch or some other item that will force you to make a conscious decision to turn on the juice.

By taking control over these personal budget items which you can indeed control, you can cut expenses immediately.
