A study conducted by MasterCard Worldwide reveals that three-fourths of consumers want a rewards credit card. But instead of rewards towards charity, nearly half stated they would spend the reward points on themselves.

The survey was comprised of 1,400 credit card holders on behalf of MasterCard by KRC Research.

The survey indicates a growing preference for luxury rewards, such as discounted city breaks, free cinema, theatre or concert tickets, free spa days, or a special house or garden makeover, and for financial incentives at traditional retailers which consumers use every day.

65% want a credit card that offers a discount on the price of the purchases, and 57% want cash-back in the form of a percentage of their spending at the end of the year. Supermarkets and gas are the commercial sectors from which consumers most want to collect rewards.

Customization of rewards; according to the survey results, is the key to growing customer preference for co-branded credit cards. 59% of respondents said they would be interested in a credit card that offers flexible benefits, allowing them to change the way they use reward points as often as they liked.
